Adventure Race Philly Racer Update (5/26/2019)

We’re looking forward to seeing you on June 8 at the inaugural Adventure Race Philly: Kelpius’ Revenge! We have a few details we wanted to pass along, to help you get ready for race day.

Start location: Each race will begin and end at Blue Bell Hill Park in the Wissahickon section of Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park (842 W Walnut Ln, Philadelphia, PA US 19144).

Gear list: A list of the gear that you’ll need for each race can be found here. Each of these items is on here to keep you and your teammates safe, fueled, and comfortable for the duration of the event, so we ask that you make sure you have everything with you at the start.

Teams: If you weren’t able to sign up with your designated team name and haven’t yet sent us that information, please respond to this email and let us know!

For family race participants, we have a few teams that have registered adult members but not kids, or kids but not adults. Please make sure to have your full roster signed up ASAP.

Waiver: We are attaching here the event waiver from the US Adventure Racing Association, and we ask that you print and sign ahead of time to expedite check-in on race morning! You will be handing in one waiver per team member. We will have waivers on site for those unable to print ahead of time.

Race-day schedule: The schedule for the day is available below. When you arrive for your designated race, you will hand in your waivers and receive your maps and course documents. For those interested, the Delaware Valley Orienteering Association will be holding brief navigation clinics one hour before the scheduled start of each race (you will need to have checked in before the clinic). Finally, there is a mandatory pre-race briefing 30 minutes before race start for each event. Please give yourself plenty of time to get situated before the briefing! You will receive t-shirts at the finish line, and awards will follow immediately after each race.

Weather: Right now, the early forecast is showing warm temps and partly cloudy skies. We hope that Mother Nature plays nice, but this race will take place rain or shine. If needed, we’ll modify the course accordingly.

Course considerations:

  • You will be using topographical maps at this year’s race. For those who have participated in our family race in the past, this year’s family course, as well as the women’s and twilight courses, will be a bit more trail heavy than some previous iterations. That said, each course still offers plenty of opportunity for route choice and navigation!
  • The family and women’s races will include a foot/bike division and a foot-only division. You may make that decision up until the pre-race briefing on race morning; you must alert race personnel by that time. That said, if you know which division you’ll be entering ahead of time, please feel free to let us know early, as it helps in our planning and printing!
  • For those taking on the foot/bike courses in the family and women’s race, and for all participants of the twilight race, you can expect the riding to be a mix of single-track, gravel, and even a bit of pavement. On the single track, you may encounter some rocks and roots, but overall this course will travel on some of the less technical stretches of the park.

Registration: Finally, our last registration deadline is fast approaching, and prices increase on June 1. If you know anyone who is planning to sign up but hasn’t yet, feel free to pass along this email and encourage them to get moving!

We’d like to take a moment to thank our generous sponsors for the event: inHabit Architecture and Design (title sponsor of the family race), Jenkintown Chiropractic, United by Blue, High Point Cafe, Riverbend Cycles, Trolley Car Diner, Big Blue Marble Bookstore, Blue Banyan, Herr’s, and Couch Tomato Cafe. We’re grateful for their support — we couldn’t do it without them!

We don’t expect to write again before race day, but if you have any questions, please feel free to email us or post them on the event facebook page. If something comes up that would benefit all participants, we’ll certainly send it out.

Looking forward to seeing you June 8!
