2020 Crooked Compass Racer Update #1

Greetings Rootstockers!

We are officially one month out from the 2020 Crooked Compass Adventure Trek! We write now with a few logistical details to get you ready for race weekend.

Lodging: As with last year, we have worked out a deal with the Super 8 in Thurmont, MD, which is just five minutes from the start location. The rate per night is $85 + tax. In order to take advantage of this offer, you need to call the hotel directly at 301-271-7888 and identify yourself as part of the Rootstock Racing group. There is limited availability at this point, as there is another event in town that weekend, so call soon to reserve!

For camping options, here is the site for reservations at Cunningham Falls.

Check-in: Check-in will take place at Cunningham Falls State Park’s manor area, 6709 Cunningham Falls Park Road, Thurmont, MD, 21788. When you drive through the gate, bear left to parking area at the end of the drive. Do not drive into the actual campground. (For those who participated last year, it’s the same start/finish, though an entirely new course.)

Schedule: We will open registration at 6:00am Saturday morning, at which time you will receive course notes, instructions, and a basic overview map. We will hold a pre-race briefing at 6:40am, and the race will begin promptly at 7:00am. The race will run from 7:00am to 5:00pm, with pizza and awards to follow immediately after.

Maps: You will receive most of the race maps on course. Maps are 1:24,000 and on 8.5×11 water-resistant paper. They will be pre-plotted, but as you’ll see on the gear list, we recommend some means of protecting your maps from the elements (ziplocks, map case, etc…).

The default for this event is that each participant will receive their own set of maps (one passport per team). If you do not want your own set of maps, please let us know before race week so we can cut down on wasted paper!

Teams: You can view the current field here. We will update it at regular intervals as new folks sign up. Please take a look and make sure all of your information is accurate. We will be placing the t-shirt order on Wednesday, March 18, so if you know of anyone who is planning to register but hasn’t yet, make sure they sign up by then to guarantee a shirt!
