We’re looking forward to seeing you all next month at the Crooked Compass Adventure Trek. This year’s race brings us back to Buchanan State Forest, but those of you who raced last year will find a vastly different landscape in 2018, complete with cliffs, caves, ridgeline views, and a touch of fascinating local history too.
We write now with a few race-day details, to help in your planning and preparation.
First, the start location: check-in will take place in the parking lot on Beans Cover Road in Chaneysville, PA, at the top of the ridge (map attached). There will be port-a-potties at the start, but little else in terms of infrastructure.
Check-in will open at 6:30am. At that point, you will receive maps and instructions. Maps are 1:24,000. They will be pre-plotted and on water-resistant paper, but as you’ll see on the gear list, we recommend some means of protecting your maps from the elements (ziplocks, map case, etc…). Each participant will receive their own set of maps.
As you’re prepping your gear and clothing, keep in mind that you will encounter pockets of dense bushwhacking on the course. We recommend long pants.
In terms of lodging:
Primitive Camping is allowed in the state forest. From the park’s website: “Primitive camping is allowed throughout the state forest, with the exception of designated natural areas, vistas, trail heads and picnic areas. Primitive camping does not include any amenities such as latrine facilities, grills or fire rings, or picnic tables. Campers are required to obtain a camping permit (no charge). Camping in groups of 10 or more requires a letter of authorization from the District Forester. Primitive backpack campers do not need a permit if they stay no more than one night at any campsite.” More information is available here.
If you’d prefer a bed the night before the race, Bedford, PA has plenty of lodging options. It is roughly 30 minutes away from the start. We will be staying at the Quality Inn in Bedford, and will try to work with the hotel to open the breakfast buffet by 5:30am on Saturday morning (no guarantees!)
After the race, please join us for an informal gathering at a bar in Bedford (exact location TBA), to share a pint and swap race stories.
Finally, the Rootstock email address will be largely unattended for the next 12 days, as the team travels to Australia for a six-day race in eastern Tasmania. We will respond to all questions and inquiries immediately upon our return.
See you in the woods!
